RecognizeGood is proud to announce the latest Lighthouse Award honoree, the Rotary Club of West Austin! This inspiring service club was founded in 1953, and has been making an amazing impact on the community for the 62 years since. As Austin has grown over those years, the number of those in need has grown along with it – and several members of West Austin Rotary have been helping those in need through the club for more than 40 years. The club’s top priority is education, and partners with Wooldridge Elementary (where more than 90% of students are considered economically disadvantaged) for the past two decades. Their Christmas Shopping Spree this year took 30 students from the school (selected by their teachers) to JCPenney at Lakeline Mall where they each shopped for $200 worth of clothing, shoes and other items their parents had indicated as needed. West Austin Rotary has also partnered with the Northwest Austin Rotary Club to install solar panels and LED lighting in low income communities in Belize, partnered with the Austin Cosmopolitan Rotary Club on water projects in Kenya, and with Rotary Clubs in Mexico on other important health projects.
2015 chapter president KC Cerny accepted the award on behalf of his group in a presentation during the club’s regular weekly meeting at the Westwood Country Club. Andrew Cooper, partner at award sponsor iRex Group and president of TyRex Group, presented the club with an award plaque, two tickets to the 2016 Ethics in Business & Community Award luncheon, along with a donation to PET-Austin in the club’s name. A PET (Personal Energy Transportation) vehicle has also been donated in the club’s name. This recognition represented a sincere “Thank you!” from the Central Texas community for decades of selfless service from the Rotary Club of West Austin.
The RecognizeGood Lighthouse Award recognizes the selfless community efforts and philanthropy of Austin-area service clubs through length, magnitude or impact of service – by highlighting “special” organizations and telling their stories, we believe that others will be inspired to make our community a better place. Award nominees may be sent to email@example.com, and are voted on by a selection committee according to the following criteria:
- Length of Service
- Magnitude of Service
- Special One-Time Event
This was the ninth RecognizeGood Lighthouse Award presented to an Austin-area service organization. Previous award winners include Sertoma of Round Rock, Rotary Club of Lakeway / Lake Travis, Austin Downtown Founders Lions Club, Town & Country Optimists Club, Northwest Austin Kiwanis, Round Rock Kiwanis, Junior League of Austin, and The Exchange Club of Austin. Thanks to Lighthouse program sponsor iRex Group, Ltd. for their generosity and active support of this program!
